Unfortunately, potholes have become sort of a Michigan tradition when the winter weather breaks. Car shops are very busy fixing tires, bent axles and more.

Potholes are a sad and somewhat dangerous thing that we deal with every spring and usually ends up being costly too. But did you know that there may be some relief in sight when it comes to paying for the damage? It’s possible you can be reimbursed for repair costs by the state of Michigan or even your city!

There’s a form from MDOT that you can print and fill out and take to any MDOT office if your car was damaged on a state road.  Get the form HERE.

For cases in Wayne County, there’s a form that you can access and fill out HERE. You can either mail it once completed or dropped off at the Wayne County Risk Management Claims Division for evaluation. Here’s the address:  500 Griswold, 20th Floor, Detroit, MI 48226.

If your car was damaged by driving over a pothole in Macomb County, you can learn information to get reimbursed HERE.  With this form, you can either email, fax or submit it once completed to the Macomb County Department of Roads. They encourage you to also include a photograph.

If you live in Oakland County, it’s possible to file an online claim HERE.

In the city of Detroit, possible pothole reimbursement information can be found HERE and then sent to the City of Detroit Law Department Claims Section.

Here’s an important thing to remember: for many of these claims, you’ll need to provide proof of the incident so be sure to include your car repair shop estimate, photographs, receipts and even witness accounts if any.
