How to Stop Sugar Cravings

Trying to give up added sugars? It’s definitely not easy since sweet foods are everywhere, tempting us to give in. But all that sugar isn’t good for our energy, health, and lifespan, so cutting it out of our diets is a smart move. But how do we make that happen? A new book, “Sugar Free 3,” focuses on a three-week program to ditch the sweet stuff and suggests these tips for resisting sugar cravings.

  • Have a snack strategy- If your sugar cravings hit in the afternoon, try an afternoon snack like guacamole with cucumber “chips,” a handful of nuts, or whipped ricotta with roasted cherries.
  • Pace your meals properly- Get in the habit of planning your meals out so you don’t get too hungry during the day and end up overeating.
  • Spice things up- It’s easy to get stuck in a rut of eating the same meal all the time because you know they’re “safe,” but don’t be afraid to add some spices to keep things exciting without added sugar.
  • Identify your favorites- Figure out which foods really satisfy you and enjoy those so you don’t feel deprived. When you’re eating meals that don’t do it for you, you’re more likely to crave sweets.
  • Get curious- Time to get creative in the kitchen by exploring new recipes and cooking with new ingredients. You may find a new favorite and by keeping it fresh, you’re helping to keep those sugar cravings away.
