President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor yesterday at the White House to retired Corporal William "Kyle" Carpenter, an Afghan war veteran who purposely took the brunt of the blow from a grenade to shield a fellow Marine in November 2010. The now 24-year-old Carpenter suffered severe wounds, including a depressed skull, the loss of his right eye, a collapsed right lung, multiple facial fractures, the loss of a third of his lower jaw and fragment injuries to his arms and legs. Obama said yesterday, "You displayed a valor in the blink of an eye that will inspire generations."
